Have you ever thought about how your daily habits can affect your gums? A study recently looked into this, focusing on 185 people divided into three groups: those with healthy gums, gingivitis, and periodontitis. Researchers were curious if diet and exercise levels played a role in gum disease. They asked about physical activity, the Mediterranean diet, and how often people ate carbs. They also examined teeth for decay, missing teeth, and filled ones. The results were revealing. People with periodontitis had poorer teeth and less frequent brushing. However, those who exercised more, particularly during leisure time, and spent less time sitting had healthier gums. This means that moving around more could really make a difference for your gums!
Around one-fifth of the participants followed the Mediterranean diet, but no clear connection was found between this diet and gum health. The same was true for carb consumption and tooth decay. What does all this tell us? It looks like being more active helps lower the risk of gum disease. But there's still lots to learn about how exercise affects our gums. We need more studies to figure this out.
