Movie Theaters: Expect More Ads Before the Big Screen
USATue Jun 24 2025
Movie theaters are changing how they show ads. Before, they only showed trailers and a few short ads. Now, they want to add more ads right before the movie starts. This might not make everyone happy.
People are noticing that movies don't start right on time. They often have to wait 20 to 30 minutes for the movie to begin. This is because there are so many ads and trailers. Some people think this is a waste of time.
A few years ago, big theater chains like Cinemark and Regal made a deal to show more ads. They even started showing ads right after the movie's official start time. AMC, the biggest chain, said no at first. They thought people would not like it.
But now, AMC is changing its mind. They say their competitors have been doing it for years without losing customers. AMC is hoping to make more money this way. They need to because of the pandemic and other money problems.
Starting July 1, AMC will add new ads to their preshow. They will have to change their current preshow, which is already long. They will have to fit in new ads without making the preshow too long. AMC is not saying much about this change.
People are already arriving late to movies. They know the movie won't start on time. In big cities like New York and Los Angeles, fewer people are in their seats when the trailers start. This shows that people are not happy with the long preshows.
One person even said, "Finally, " when the movie started after a long preshow. This shows that people are tired of waiting. They want the movie to start on time.
