Moving Forward with Space: Senate Bill for NASA’s Future
Washington, USAWed Dec 25 2024
This: a Senate bill is on the table, directing NASA to shift its focus towards commercial space stations and to tackle cost overruns in science missions. This bill, introduced by Senators Maria Cantwell (D-Wash. ) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas), looks to speed up the development of commercial space stations while maintaining a continuous human presence in low Earth orbit. The considerable team of senators backing this bill believe it will keep NASA at the forefront of space exploration from Earth's orbit to Mars.
The bill’s main goal? To make sure we have space stations up and running before the International Space Station's (ISS) journey comes to an end. NASA isn't allowed to de-orbit the ISS until a commercial station is operational. The bill even defines “continuous human presence” clearly, ensuring that astronauts are always in space either permanently or with the ability to support human life continuously. NASA seems to support this plan, given their recent strategy update.
Commercial space stations? Yes! The bill wants NASA to push forward its Commercial LEO Destinations (CLD) program, setting tight deadlines to make sure companies are ready by the end of 2026. It’s a rush compared to NASA’s proposed timeline.
Cost overruns in science missions have been a pain. The bill acknowledges that early cost estimates can be tricky, leading to unforeseen increases. It asks the Government Accountability Office to look into this and report back. Mars Sample Return (MSR), a mission with cost overruns, is specifically mentioned. The bill wants a revised plan with realistic budget and schedule estimates, and it wants NASA to partner with U. S. companies for the job.
Some Senate leaders, like Cruz and Cantwell, will continue their roles in the new Congress, so this bill might influence future decisions. But, with a new continuing resolution extending government funding to mid-March and the House showing little interest, the fate of this bill is uncertain. Stay tuned!
