Moving Genesis Invitational: A New Venue After Wildfires

The Genesis Invitational, a significant golf event run by Tiger Woods’ foundation, is changing its location due to the recent wildfires around Los Angeles. The PGA Tour has decided to keep the event dates, February 13-16, but will hold it at a different site. The change comes after the wildfires, particularly the Palisades Fire, caused extensive damage, destroying nearly 3, 000 structures and killing eight people. The fire, which started on January 7, is currently 22% contained. While the Riviera Country Club, the usual host, has been spared, the surrounding community has not been as fortunate. The PGA Tour is exploring various options for the new venue, with a preference to stay in Southern California. Sherwood Country Club, which has hosted pro events like the 2020 Zozo Championship, is one potential replacement. Other possibilities include Torrey Pines or PGA West, which is hosting the American Express this week. This isn’t the first time the Tour has had to make such adjustments. During the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple tournaments were hosted at the same venues, such as Muirfield Village and Torrey Pines. The decision to move the Genesis Invitational highlights the adaptability of the PGA Tour in the face of unexpected challenges. It also underscores the importance of having contingency plans in place for major events.
