Baltimore is seeing more Mpox cases this year, but don't panic. Health officials say the risk to most people is still low. Since January, there have been 24 cases, with over half happening after September. Last year, only seven cases were reported in the whole year.
This might sound scary, but it's not as bad as it was in 2022. Back then, Baltimore had 241 cases between July and December. Since then, the numbers have stayed pretty low.
So, who should be worried? Mostly, gay and bisexual men, or anyone with many sexual partners. The virus spreads through close contact, like sharing things or sexual activity. It can cause a painful rash, fever, and other symptoms. Most people get better on their own, but it can be serious for those with weak immune systems.
There are two types of Mpox: Clade I and Clade II. Clade II is milder and has been around in the U. S. since 2022. Clade I is worse, but no cases of it have been found in Baltimore yet.
If you're concerned, vaccines are available. You can get them through the Baltimore City Health Department or your doctor. Since 2022, Maryland has had 857 cases and three deaths. Most of these were in Baltimore City and Prince George's County.
