Mullin Faces Tough Questions Before Leading Homeland Security
Washington, USAWed Mar 18 2026
Sen. Markwayne Mullin, the Republican chosen by former President Trump to head the Department of Homeland Security, had a rocky confirmation hearing that highlighted concerns about his temperament and past foreign trips. The meeting was heated from the start, with Senate Homeland Security chair Rand Paul calling Mullin’s past remarks about violence and his public threat to a union leader into question. Paul asked why Mullin thought he deserved a 2017 assault and whether someone who has praised violent actions could lead an agency that must use force responsibly.
Democratic members also pressed Mullin to explain trips he claimed were “classified” during his time in the House. He said the trips were official and classified, but refused to give details or names of people who had clearance. Paul and Democrat Gary Peters offered to discuss the matter in a secure facility, but Mullin insisted no paperwork had been provided and that he had nothing to hide. The debate raised the possibility that Mullin’s nomination could be delayed, though most Republicans are expected to support him.
Mullin also addressed his approach to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He said he would shift ICE’s focus toward working with local governments instead of being the frontline, and apologized for a harsh comment about a Minnesota protester who was shot by DHS agents. He rejected the idea that the shooting was justified, saying an officer made a split‑second decision when a vehicle struck him. Mullin also pledged to end a policy that required the Secretary to review all DHS spending over $100, 000, calling it micromanagement.
Throughout the hearing, Mullin challenged Paul’s accusations of lying and violent rhetoric. He said he is direct and blunt, and that the criticism was more personal than substantive. Despite the confrontation, most senators appeared willing to move forward with a vote, and Mullin said he would be ready to discuss classified matters in a secure room if requested.
