Hailing from Venezuela, José Ibarra, 26, was found guilty of murdering Georgia nursing student Laken Riley. The tragic incident happened back in February on the University of Georgia campus. The case sparked national debates during the recent presidential race due to Ibarra's immigration status. Ibarra had entered the US illegally in 2022 and was allowed to stay while his immigration case was pending.
The verdict was announced on Wednesday by Judge H Patrick Haggard of the Athens-Clarke County Superior Court. Ibarra's defense team opted for a bench trial, meaning Judge Haggard alone decided the outcome. Riley's family and roommates were visibly emotional, while Ibarra remained composed.
The trial kicked off the previous Friday and included various witnesses. Prosecutors presented testimonies from numerous law enforcement officers, Riley's roommates, and a woman who shared the apartment with Ibarra. The defense called forth a police officer, a jogger, and one of Ibarra's neighbors before resting their case on Wednesday morning.
Prosecutor Sheila Ross explained that Ibarra met Riley while she was running on campus on February 22nd and killed her during a struggle. Riley, 22, was studying at Augusta University’s College of Nursing, which has a campus in Athens, approximately 70 miles east of Atlanta.
Defense attorney Dustin Kirby acknowledged the tragedy but questioned the sufficiency of the evidence against Ibarra. Throughout the trial, Riley’s parents, roommates, and other loved ones filled the courtroom.
