Nairobi Slum Daycares Struggle with Clean Water and Toilets

Nairobi informal settlements, KenyaThu Oct 22 2026

Many childcare centers in Nairobi's informal settlements do not have clean water or safe toilets. Kids play and learn in places where hygiene is poor. This puts their health at risk every day.

A research team studied this problem. They read 25 policy documents and interviewed 40 people. Those people included parents, caregivers, and government officials. The team used a special framework to understand how rules are made and applied.

The study found big gaps. Policies talk about water and sanitation often. But hygiene rules appear much less. Three different ministries share responsibility. They often duplicate work or leave gaps. Coordination between them is weak.

Because of this, real conditions in centers stay bad. Rules written in offices do not match life in the settlements. Children continue to face dirty water and broken toilets. Better teamwork and realistic plans are needed to fix this.
