NASA is sending a massive spacecraft called Europa Clipper to Jupiter's icy moon Europa. Why? Because scientists think there could be life in its liquid water ocean hidden beneath a thick ice shell. Europa Clipper will study the moon's surface and atmosphere with nine different instruments. It might take a while to get there, but it's a big step towards finding life beyond Earth.
Europa has a smooth surface that hints at a young, recently refreshed layer of ice. This could mean there are ice volcanoes spewing water over the surface. Plus, Europa has its own magnetic field, suggesting a hidden liquid layer inside, just like Earth.
Jupiter's gravity is so strong that it can squeeze and stretch Europa, creating underground oceans. These oceans might have water vapor plumes shooting out into space. Isn't that cool?
Europa Clipper is a huge spacecraft, as wide as a basketball court when its solar sails are open. It weighs about as much as a big elephant. It's going to be a long journey, taking more than five years to reach Jupiter. But once it gets there, it will help us understand if Europa could be home to alien life.
The spacecraft has cameras to study geologic activity and thermal imaging to find warmer spots on the surface. It also has tools to measure the ocean's depth and salt levels, and the thickness of the ice shell. There's even a dust analyzer to look at what gets ejected from the surface.
We might not find life right away. Europa Clipper is just looking for signs that life could exist. If we find something interesting, we'll need to send more missions to explore deeper.
