NASA launched a spacecraft named Europa Clipper on Oct. 14, 2022, aiming to investigate Jupiter's moon Europa. This frozen world might be home to hidden oceans and conditions suitable for life. But before it can explore Europa, the spacecraft has to travel an astounding 1. 8 billion miles (2. 9 billion kilometers) through the solar system. This journey won't be straightforward.
First, Europa Clipper will swing by Earth and Mars for a boost in speed—a technique called gravity assist. After these stopovers, it will zip back to Earth for another gravity assist before finally heading toward Jupiter. The spacecraft is expected to arrive in 2030 and will then spend three years studying Europa. Scientists hope this mission will help us understand if life exists beyond Earth.
Jupiter's immense gravity causes extreme tides on Europa, which could generate heat and stir up chemical reactions in Europa's ocean. Life as we know it needs water, energy, and nutrients. Europa might have all three. Some think the moon could have been seeded with life-supporting chemicals during its early years. Additionally, the toxic radiation from Jupiter might actually fuel life deep under Europa's icy shell.
The Europa Clipper is equipped with nine instruments to gather data about the moon's ice shell and ocean. It will make several flybys of Europa, hoping to uncover secrets about its habitability. The spacecraft's life will end in 2034 when it's intentionally crashed into another of Jupiter's moons, Ganymede.
