NASA's Roman Telescope Gets 22 Years of Life After Perfect Engine Burn

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched on August 30 from Cape Canaveral. It is headed to the L2 Lagrange point, which is on the far side of Earth from the sun. The James Webb Space Telescope also operates there. Roman's main job is to study dark energy and hunt for exoplanets. Its original mission was supposed to last five years, with a possible five-year extension if funding allowed.

The telescope ended up lighter than planned. Engineers had designed the fuel system for a maximum mass of 21,605 pounds, but the finished spacecraft weighed only 17,760 pounds. That left extra room, so the team filled the fuel tanks completely instead of just meeting the 10-year requirement. This gave Roman enough fuel for at least a 14-year mission before it even left Earth.

A day after launch, Roman fired its engine for three minutes to set course for L2. The burn was remarkably precise, hitting 99% accuracy. It used just 40 pounds of fuel, less than 10% of the 441 pounds budgeted for the maneuver. That efficiency added about four more years to the telescope's life, bringing the total to 18 years.

There is another bonus. Because the first burn was so accurate, the second course correction planned for early December will need much less fuel too. That could add another four years, pushing the total to at least 22 years of science operations. Once Roman reaches its orbit at L2, it will only need small burns every 28 days to stay in position, which uses very little fuel.

If nothing goes wrong, this observatory could keep exploring space until at least 2048. That means decades of new discoveries could be on the way. Think about it: a spacecraft that was supposed to last 10 years might now operate for more than twice that long, all because it was built lighter than expected and its engine fired with near-perfect accuracy.
