Nations Talk, Projects Slow: Nepal’s New Foreign Minister Meets China

Beijing, ChinaTue Jun 16 2026
The new foreign minister of a small Himalayan country visited the capital of the giant neighbor after his party won the elections in March. He was the first to meet Beijing’s top diplomat since that victory, and he had just returned from a visit to the regional rival India. China’s officials say they see Nepal as an important partner in their “neighbourhood diplomacy. ” They promised to help the country protect its sovereignty and keep its borders intact. The Chinese leader of the foreign ministry told the Nepalese minister that the two sides would work together on power plants, highways, ports and airports. The Nepalese government is in a difficult spot because it has been trying to finish projects that were part of China’s big Belt and Road plan. The work has stalled mainly because the two sides disagree on how to pay for it. This has made China a little nervous about how much influence the new government will have.
The Nepal‑India border, which stretches for 1, 751 kilometres, has been a source of tension for about eighty years. In Delhi earlier this month the foreign minister said his new government was “free from past political baggage” and ready to improve ties with India. This shift gives the small country a bit more leverage over China, which now has to prove its value to Kathmandu. Experts say that when a government changes in a country that is close to China, Beijing can feel unsettled. One scholar from the China‑Global South Project noted that China prefers stability and dislikes sudden political shifts that might threaten its interests. He added that the Nepalese election outcome was unexpected and could have surprised Chinese officials. In short, the new foreign minister is trying to balance relationships with two powerful neighbors while pushing forward infrastructure projects that have been stuck for years. China is ready to help, but the road ahead remains uncertain as both sides negotiate how best to move forward.
