NATO's Plan for Robo-Boats: Protection in Telecom-Critical Waters

Having a group of friendly robots patrolling the oceans to keep important underwater cables safe. This is what NATO is planning! These aren't just any robots; they're unmanned surface vessels (USVs) designed to watch over crucial naval zones. Think of them like security cameras on streets, but for the ocean. Admiral Pierre Vandier, who's behind this idea, wants these USVs to start by keeping an eye on the seas' surface. Later, they'll dive deeper and monitor underwater areas too. Why? Because areas like the Baltic and Mediterranean seas have had some mysterious mischief-makers cutting underwater cables recently. NATO suspects Russia might be behind it. The good news is that the technology for these robots already exists. There's a team in the US Navy, Task Force 59, which has been using similar drones successfully. They've been keeping watch in the Middle East since 2021. Admiral Vandier wants to launch NATO's own fleet quickly, hopefully before the next NATO meeting in June. First, there'll be some experimental chats about the plan. Then, NATO will work together with allies to make everything happen.
