Navigating Wheelchair Challenges: A User's Perspective

Using a manual wheelchair (MWC) can be tough, especially for new users. A recent study talked to 18 clinicians and 25 MWC users to find out what makes things hard for them. They spent time at various rehabilitation centers, having chats that lasted between 30 to 60 minutes. They asked about moving around indoors and outdoors, how to push the wheelchair properly, and how using a wheelchair affects emotions. The study found some common issues. People had trouble moving around inside and outside. Many struggled with basic skills like propelling the wheelchair. Emotions also played a big part. Users and clinicians both said there's a need for better training. This would include safety lessons and adjusting the wheelchair for better comfort and movement. The study also pointed out that mental support and public awareness are crucial. They can help reduce stigma and make society more inclusive. The findings are important for creating special training programs that address both physical and mental challenges, aiming to boost users' independence and quality of life.
