New Chapter at Georgia Tech: A Leader’s Move to the Aspen Institute

Atlanta, USATue Jun 16 2026
Georgia Tech, a top public university known for its engineering excellence, will soon welcome new leadership. The change comes after seven years of stewardship by President Angel Cabrera, who has decided to take on a new role. Cabrera will head the Aspen Institute, a nonprofit based in Washington, D. C. , that focuses on fostering real‑world influence through talks, fellowships and research. His move is praised for the energy and warmth he brought to the campus, according to University System of Georgia officials. Before joining Tech in 2019, Cabrera earned a Ph. D. in psychology and cognitive science from the same institution. He had previously led George Mason University, Thunderbird School of Global Management and IE Business School in Madrid.
During his tenure at Georgia Tech, he championed several initiatives: the revitalization of Tech Square and Science Square, the launch of a Creative Quarter, and an inclusive plan called “Progress and Service for All” aimed at developing leaders who blend technology with social good. Cabrera will stay on until November to ensure a smooth transition, but the name of his successor has not yet been announced. The institution’s community is hopeful that the next president will continue to elevate Tech’s global research reputation while maintaining its innovative spirit. The Aspen Institute welcomed Cabrera with high expectations, noting his intellectual curiosity and community‑building instincts. Their outgoing CEO highlighted that he understands the Institute’s mission and is poised to carry its legacy forward.
