New Faces, Old Battles: The Race for Nadler's Seat
New York City, USAThu Nov 13 2025
A new chapter is unfolding in New York politics. Erik Bottcher, a councilman from Manhattan, has stepped into the ring to replace Representative Jerrold Nadler. This isn't a quiet entry, though. The race is heating up with a diverse lineup of candidates, each bringing their own flavor to the table.
Bottcher, a proud liberal, isn't shy about his stance. He's called out President Trump, criticized the city's rising living costs, and backed Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. But what sets him apart, he argues, is his experience as a gay man and an LGBTQ+ rights activist. He's faced down right-wing extremists, stood up to vandalism and assault, and held them accountable. That's a tough resume to beat.
The 12th District is a big deal. It's home to Fortune 500 companies, millionaires, and cultural landmarks. It's safely Democratic, but the voters are split. In the recent mayoral election, they were almost evenly divided between Mamdani and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Bottcher's campaign video pulls at heartstrings. He talks about growing up as a closeted gay teen in the Adirondacks, attempting suicide at 15, and spending a month in a psychiatric facility. He credits health insurance for saving his life and says it sparked his political awakening. Mental health is a big issue for him, and it's clear why.
He's not new to the game. He joined the City Council as a staff member in 2009, worked as an aide to Cuomo during the same-sex marriage bill, and returned to the Council as chief of staff. He was elected to the Council himself in 2021, representing a district that includes Greenwich Village, Chelsea, and Hell's Kitchen.
Bottcher plans to campaign on his track record. He's pushed for expanding mental health services in homeless shelters and supported affordable housing projects. He backed Mamdani in the mayor's race, impressed by how he brought out young voters. But he's not afraid to disagree. He supports Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state, unlike Mamdani. And while he's on board with a rent freeze, he wants to see more emphasis on building new housing.
When asked about Jack Schlossberg, a political newcomer with a famous last name, Bottcher stays classy. He acknowledges the power of celebrity but emphasizes the value of hard work and community activism.
