New HDMI 2. 2: Bigger, Faster, and Ready for the Future
Thu Jun 26 2025
The HDMI Forum has just rolled out HDMI 2. 2, the latest update to the HDMI specification. This new version brings some serious upgrades, like support for video resolutions up to 16K at 60Hz and a maximum bandwidth of 96Gbps. That's a big jump from the previous version, which maxed out at 48Gbps. The forum also introduced a new cable designation called Ultra96, which is designed to support the higher bandwidths.
So, what does this mean for the average person? Well, it means that in the future, you might be able to enjoy even more detailed and smoother video quality. But don't expect to see 16K displays in stores anytime soon. Most content right now is still in 4K or 8K. However, HDMI 2. 2 is all about future-proofing. It ensures that manufacturers have a standard to work with as technology continues to evolve.
The new spec also includes something called the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP). This is designed to improve audio/video sync across systems where the signal goes through multiple devices before reaching the final display. This could be a big deal for people who have complex home theater setups.
In a statement, Chandlee Harrell, president of the HDMI Forum, said, \"The HDMI Forum is proud to release the new HDMI 2. 2 Specification to enable higher performance capabilities and features for exciting and immersive new solutions and products. (. . . ) And the introduction of the new Ultra96 feature name will help consumers and end-users ensure their product's maximum bandwidth is supported. \"
Ultra96 is the next step after the current \"Ultra High Speed\" cables. It's a feature name that manufacturers can use to indicate that their product supports a maximum of 64Gbps, 80Gbps, or 96Gbps bandwidth in compliance with the HDMI 2. 2 Specification. The new Ultra96 HDMI Cable supports up to 96Gbps and all HDMI 2. 2 applications.
So, while you might not see a need for 16K resolution right now, it's good to know that the technology is there when you need it. And with Ultra96 cables on the way, you'll be able to make the most of it.
