New Ice Sheet Gives Coeur d’Alene More Skating Space

Coeur d’Alene, USAWed Apr 15 2026
The Kootenai Youth Recreation Organization (KYRO) is taking a big step to keep local skaters on the ice by building a second rink at Frontier Ice Arena. The arena has already stretched its capacity with every available sheet of ice in use, so a new, NHL‑sized surface is the logical next move. The expansion will cost $5. 3 million, and KYRO has already raised $1. 7 million; the remaining $3. 7 million is still needed to finish the project. Frontier Ice Arena, a hub for hockey, sled hockey, curling, figure skating and family events, has served the community since its rebuild in 2012 after a roof collapse in 2008. The new design will add nine locker rooms and allow the venue to seat up to 700 people, expanding its total area from 34, 000 square feet. Once the construction is done, both ice sheets will be visible from the lobby after temporary panels are removed. The timing is timely, as local hockey coaches and skaters say the lack of ice time hampers growth.
CDA Hockey Academy President Shawn Luteyn noted that interest from kids and families is high, but the shortage of ice limits competitive play. Youth council member Tyler Karchut added that a second rink would not only improve skill development but also strengthen the sense of community. Spokane Figure Skating Club’s executive director Moe Herr highlighted that, for 15 years, the club has trained about 400 skaters annually at Frontier Arena. She pointed out that Coeur d’Alene is effectively a “skating desert, ” making competitive and performance opportunities difficult to access. A larger facility would help local skaters avoid costly travel for competitions and practice sessions. Construction has already begun, with the new rink’s framework expected to be largely finished by fall. The project represents KYRO’s continued commitment to providing safe, high‑quality recreation for youth and families in the region.
