New Jersey Weather: Freezing Rain Alert and Warm-Up Ahead

New Jersey is in for a weather rollercoaster. Tonight, the state will see dry conditions with clouds rolling in. But don't get too comfortable—tomorrow is set to bring a mix of rain and warmer temperatures. By late Tuesday afternoon, rain is expected to hit the northern half of the state. A low-pressure system moving northward will bring precipitation mainly along and north of the I-78 and I-80 corridors. While most areas will see plain rain due to warmer air blowing in from the south, higher elevations in northwest New Jersey might experience a brief period of freezing rain. Don't worry too much about the freezing rain, though. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing overnight, turning all precipitation into rain showers. Meanwhile, southern New Jersey is likely to see little to no rain from this system.After this system moves out, Wednesday will be breezy with winds gusting between 20 and 30 mph. Despite the wind, mild conditions will continue as high pressure builds from the west. High temperatures on Wednesday are forecast to reach the 40s in northern counties and the low to mid-50s in southern areas. Thursday will feature fair weather with a mix of sun and clouds as high pressure moves across the region. Temperatures are expected to remain about 10 degrees above average for early January. By Friday, a warm front will lift northward through the state, bringing rain showers and very mild temperatures ranging from the 50s to low 60s. Forecasters note some uncertainty regarding the strength of the low-pressure system late in the week, but unsettled weather is expected to persist through Saturday. Rain remains likely Friday night into Saturday, with temperatures potentially climbing higher than Friday before a cold front crosses the state late Saturday. Colder, blustery conditions are forecast to return on Sunday, bringing temperatures back to more seasonable levels for the start of next week.
