New Leader Takes Charge of Tekken 8 After Director Leaves Bandai Namco
Tokyo, JapanMon Jun 01 2026
Kohei Ikeda, who helped shape the fighting game Tekken 8, announced his exit from Bandai Namco Entertainment on social media. His departure follows the earlier move of general producer Katsuhiro Harada, leaving the project without two of its key figures.
Ikeda’s career began in 2008 as a game designer for Soulcalibur IV after joining Bandai Namco the year before. He also produced video content for the Tougeki fighting tournament, blending creative design with media production.
He later joined the Tekken team and worked on battle design for Tekken Tag Tournament 2. From Tekken 7 onward, he served as director and became a core member alongside Harada and producer Michael Murray. He managed both production and direction duties for Tekken 8, steering the project through its first season and preparing for Season 3.
With Ikeda’s exit, Murray will assume full leadership of Tekken 8. In his farewell message, Ikeda thanked fans and teammates for the opportunity to direct Tekken 7 and 8. He noted that player feedback, even harsh criticism about game balance, pushed the team to improve continuously.
Ikeda said he would pass the baton to his colleagues and pursue new development challenges. The game itself received a patch on May 28 that added Season 3 character Kunimitsu, fixed bugs, and tweaked the Heat system. The update aimed to reduce risky moves with long heat durations, ensuring a fairer competitive play field.
The Tekken community now watches as the project moves forward under new guidance, hoping that the changes will satisfy players and maintain the franchise’s reputation for balanced fighting mechanics.
