New Mexico Builder Eyes Texas for Growth

New Mexico, USATue Jun 16 2026
A local home‑builder from New Mexico is seriously considering expanding into Texas because his state’s slow population growth and heavy taxes make it hard to keep up. The company, founded in 2010, has been building for two decades but the owner says the state’s bureaucracy and rising home prices keep them stuck. He posted on social media that Texas is a “near weekly temptation, ” not because he wants to leave New Mexico, but because the Lone Star State offers fast permitting, no income tax and a booming job market.
Texas approves roughly twice as many new housing units each month as New Mexico, even though its population is about fifteen times larger. In 2025, Lubbock County approved 2 858 units for a small population of 328 k, while Bernalillo County approved only 1 560 for a larger population of 668 k. The builder says this shows an “anti‑growth” mindset in New Mexico that could hurt the state’s long‑term health. He is still researching other states like Utah and Arizona, but the decision would be a multiyear effort. He remains proud of his roots and plans to keep working in New Mexico while exploring new markets for the company’s future.
