New Pathways to Glory: The Alfond Village Plan

Orono, Maine, USAWed May 06 2026
The University of Maine has unveiled sketches for a new “Athletics Village” that will link its sports arenas with wide walkways, benches, signs and statues. The project is entirely funded by private donors and aims to make the campus feel more welcoming while showcasing Maine’s natural scenery. The design will honor Harold Alfond, the richest benefactor in the university’s history, by adding a fresh statue and updating existing monuments. A new entrance sign will greet visitors, and the old granite plaques will be moved to a corner of Long Road and College Avenue. The road between Alfond Arena and Stadium has been renamed Harold Alfond Drive, and a statue will sit near the crosswalk that connects the three main athletic sites.
The original Alfond statue will be cleaned and placed at the east side of the village walk, just behind the softball complex’s grandstand. Alfond founded Dexter Shoe and sold it to Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway for $433 million in stock; the investment later grew while Dexter declined. His wealth funded the Harold Alfond Foundation, which held over a billion dollars in 2024. The foundation’s $320 million donation to the Maine system remains the largest gift ever given to a public university in New England, with $170 million earmarked for sports facilities.
