New Pope's Past Remarks Spark Conversations About LGBTQ+ Inclusion

Vatican CitySat May 10 2025
The Catholic Church has a new leader. Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, took the reins after a recent election. His past comments on LGBTQ+ issues have sparked conversations. Back in 2012, when he was the Augustinian prior general in Chicago, he criticized what he called the “homosexual lifestyle. ”He also spoke about the media's role in promoting acceptance of same-sex relationships. This news has stirred up reactions from various groups. Some are hopeful, while others are cautious. Francis DeBernardo, from New Ways Ministry, a group that advocates for LGBTQ+ Catholics, expressed disappointment. He hopes that Leo's views have evolved over the years, especially during Pope Francis' papacy. The group is taking a wait-and-see approach. In 2012, a video showed Prevost speaking at the world Synod of Bishops. He talked about how mass media portrays alternative families, like those with same-sex partners, in a positive light. This, he argued, goes against Catholic doctrine. He singled out TV shows and movies for their sympathetic portrayal of these families. When asked about his views in 2023, Prevost acknowledged Pope Francis' call for a more inclusive church. He said that while doctrine hasn't changed, the church is looking to be more welcoming. This is a shift from his earlier remarks, but it's unclear how much his views have truly changed. His first remarks as pope focused on building bridges and God’s love for all. The Rev. James Martin, who founded an LGBTQ+ outreach ministry, praised Prevost's humility and experience. He believes Prevost brings a wealth of knowledge from his work in Peru and the Vatican. Martin also noted that Prevost treated him with respect and dignity. Pope Francis, known for his efforts to make the church more welcoming to LGBTQ+ people, left the same core doctrine in place. The church still rejects same-sex marriage and condemns gay or lesbian sexual relations. This has left many wondering what direction Leo will take. The U. S. -based LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD called on the new pontiff to build on the progress made by his predecessor. They hope that Leo will further embrace LGBTQ+ people with compassion, dignity, and love. This is a critical time for the church, and many are watching to see how Leo will lead.
