New Proton Center Brings Cancer Care Home for Kids
Estero Southwest Florida, USAFri May 22 2026
Southwest Florida Proton, a new cancer clinic in Estero, now offers proton therapy that many young patients need. The center lets families stay close to home instead of traveling far for treatment.
Proton therapy is especially helpful for children because it targets tumors more precisely than regular radiation. This precision protects growing bodies and reduces long‑term side effects like learning problems or new cancers later in life.
The clinic uses the IBA ProteusONE machine, one of the most powerful proton systems worldwide. It treats all ages but focuses on kids with cancers in sensitive areas such as the brain, spine and eyes.
The building also hosts a conventional radiation department and an imaging center that performs PET, CT and MRI scans. A playroom and a bright mural give the waiting area a friendly feel for young patients.
Before this opening, many families had to fly or drive to other Florida cities for proton treatments. That added stress and extra costs, such as hotel rooms and meals, that insurance rarely covers. Now those burdens are gone, allowing parents to focus on their child’s recovery.
The new center reflects a growing trend in local health care: keeping advanced treatments within the community so families can get support and treatment without leaving home.
