New Saints on the Horizon: Pope Francis' Latest Moves
Tue Feb 25 2025
Pope Francis has given the green light to advance the sainthood processes for several individuals, including a U. S. military chaplain and an Italian layman. This move comes after a meeting with high-ranking Vatican officials. The Pope recognized the selfless acts of two individuals, Fr. Emil Kapaun and Salvo D’Acquisto, who gave their lives for others. This recognition is part of a new category introduced by Pope Francis in 2017, which honors those who have freely offered their lives for others.
Fr. Emil Kapaun, born in Kansas in 1916, served as a chaplain in both World War II and the Korean War. He was captured during the Korean War and died in a prisoner of war camp. His selfless acts during his captivity have been recognized as an "offering of life. " This category is distinct from martyrdom and heroic virtues, focusing on those who have given their lives for others.
Salvo D’Acquisto, born in Naples in 1920, was a member of the Italian Carabinieri during World War II. He also gave his life for others, and his actions have been recognized in the same category as Fr. Kapaun. The Pope also recognized the heroic virtues of three other individuals: Michele Maura Montaner, Didaco Bessi, and Cunegonda Siwiec. These individuals are now one step closer to being declared Venerable, the next stage in the process of canonization.
The Pope has also approved the canonization of two Blesseds: Giuseppe Gregorio Hernández Cisneros and Bartolo Longo. Bartolo Longo, known as the "Apostle of the Rosary, " was a lawyer who initially despised the Church but later converted and established the Shrine of the Holy Rosary at Pompeii. This decision comes after a favorable vote from the Ordinary Session of the Cardinals and Bishops of the Dicastery for the canonization.
The Pope has decided to convene a Consistory to discuss the upcoming canonizations. This Consistory will determine the date for the canonization of these new saints. The process of canonization is a long and thorough one, involving extensive investigation and verification of miracles attributed to the candidates. This recognition of new saints is a significant event in the Catholic Church, as it honors individuals who have lived exemplary lives and have inspired others through their faith and actions.
