New Scientist Joins Nano‑Medicine Company to Tackle Tough Joint Diseases

Eascra Biotech, a startup that builds tiny delivery machines for medicines, has hired Dr. Anne Yau as a Life Science Research Scientist.
She will work in the company’s preclinical laboratory at the Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives facility in Worcester, where researchers test new tools before they reach patients.
Dr. Yau’s main job is to help develop Janus Base Nanoparticle (JBNp) systems that can carry drugs into hard‑to‑reach places in the body, such as damaged cartilage and solid tumors.
With almost a decade of experience in drug research, nanotechnology, and advanced cell models, Dr. Yau is well‑matched to the company’s focus.
She earned her Ph. D. at the University of Connecticut, working in a lab led by Eascra co‑founder Dr. Yupeng Chen.
Her doctoral work built injectable JBN structures that support the repair of joint tissue, a perfect fit for Eascra’s technology.
“Dr. Yau understands this field deeply, and she believes that JBN‑based treatments can truly improve patient lives, ” said Mari Anne Snow, co‑founder and CEO.

Eascra Biotech is already a pioneer in producing medical nanoparticles in space.
The company has flown five missions to the International Space Station and is the first commercial firm to grow nanomaterials in orbit for use on Earth.
Its JBNp platform can deliver fragile molecules like RNA into tough tissues and keep them stable at room temperature, removing the need for cold storage.
Eascra’s goal is to bring this delivery system—designed by Dr. Chen—to patients who need treatments for joint pain, kidney problems, and cancers that are hard to treat.
The company is working with NASA, the ISS National Laboratory, and private space firms to bring its technology to market faster.
It is also looking for business partners who need new ways to deliver drugs and improve patient outcomes.
