Tokyo, JapanFri Apr 18 2025
The Star Wars universe is expanding with a new film. This one is called Starfighter. It is set to hit theaters on May 28, 2027. This is just a few weeks after Avengers: Secret Wars, another big Disney movie, comes out on May 7, 2027.
The news was shared in Tokyo, Japan. It happened at a big Star Wars event. This event is held every two years. It celebrates everything related to the Star Wars galaxy. Fans were excited to hear about this new project.
Ryan Gosling is starring in the movie. He is working with director Shawn Levy. Gosling shared his excitement on stage. He talked about how much he loves the script. He thinks it has a great story and original characters. He also praised Levy, saying he is the perfect director for this story.
Gosling also shared a personal moment. A picture of his childhood Star Wars bedsheets was shown. His mom sent it in. Gosling joked that his mom still has them. He thinks she wants to justify keeping them for so long. He also mentioned that he has been dreaming about Star Wars since he was a kid.
Levy has been working on this project since 2022. Jonathan Tropper wrote the script. He has worked with Levy on other films. The plot details are still a secret. But there are rumors about the cast. There seems to be a search for a teenage actor and two villains.
Starfighter is a standalone movie. It is not connected to the Skywalker Saga. This saga focuses on Luke Skywalker and his father, Anakin. Starfighter takes place about five years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Levy confirmed that production will start this fall.
There is a lot of interest in this project. It will be only the second Star Wars movie since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The first movie since Skywalker will be The Mandalorian and Grogu. This is a spinoff based on the popular Disney+ series The Mandalorian. It is scheduled for a May 22, 2026 release.
