New Vegas and Bethesda: A Clash of Visions

Washington, Redmond, USAWed Apr 22 2026
Obsidian’s former writer, Chris Avellone, claims that Bethesda disliked Fallout: New Vegas so much it stopped the partnership after a PowerPoint meeting. He says the studio was unhappy with the game’s direction, especially its survival‑horror style in the Dead Money DLC. Avellone notes that reviews were used as a metric and that Bethesda threatened to end the collaboration because of negative scores. The PowerPoint, he recalls, listed every mistake Obsidian supposedly made, which demoralised the team.
The disagreement comes after Fallout 4 shifted the series toward action gameplay, sparking debate among fans about what the franchise should be. Some viewers see New Vegas as a model of true RPG quality, and its success is used to argue for the original spirit of Fallout. Now both studios belong to Microsoft, and any conflict from 15 years ago is likely forgotten; even top figures at Bethesda have praised Obsidian’s work publicly.
