New Ways to Fund Scientific Curiosity

Curiosity-driven research is the wellspring of scientific breakthroughs and technological advancements. Over time, different ways of funding this type of research have emerged, shaping how money is allocated today. However, many scientists are unhappy with the current funding systems. They point out problems like too much focus on mission-oriented research, unequal funding across regions and countries, favoritism towards certain researchers, and biases against women and people of color. They also dislike the time spent on writing and reviewing proposals instead of doing research.To address these issues, there are several alternative funding models. Some suggest simple changes, like giving more weight to research proposals or the scientists themselves, and ensuring that funding panels include diverse members. Other proposals involve more significant changes, such as spreading funding more evenly or using lotteries to reduce bias. There are even radical ideas, like removing political control and having an international competition for funds through a World Research Council, along with national funding. No single method may be the best solution. It's crucial to consider the pros and cons of evaluating these alternative models through empirical studies.
