New Weather App Gives More Than Just Rain Alerts

A team that once built a hit weather app for Apple is back with Acme Weather, promising better forecasts and more playful alerts. The creators claim their new app improves on the accuracy they offered before selling to Apple by combining several data sources—numerical models, satellite feeds, ground stations and radar—to generate a primary prediction. On top of that, they display alternative outcomes as gray lines on the forecast graph so users see how certain or uncertain each result is.
The developers explain that knowing these options helps people plan around storms, especially when weather can shift from snow to rain later in the day. They note that many apps only give a single “best guess, ” which can be misleading when models disagree. Acme Weather’s design lets users quickly see if most models agree or if results diverge.
Beyond consumer features, the team is still deciding whether to offer a developer API. The app costs $25 a year after a two‑week free trial, covering the expenses of pulling in multiple weather models and building custom maps instead of relying on third‑party services. It already ships with radar, lightning, precipitation totals, wind, temperature, humidity, cloud cover and hurricane track maps.
Users can share local conditions through Community Reports to improve real‑time accuracy. Acme Weather also plans quirky alerts for rainbows and sunsets, housed in an “Acme Labs” section. Notifications can be tailored to preferences like wind or UV levels.
The founders argue that an independent app lets them experiment without the slow cycles and risk aversion of a large company. They see Acme Weather as a way to push creative ideas while still delivering reliable forecasts.
The app is live on iOS, with an Android release forthcoming.
