New York City Braces for a Snowy Surprise

New York City found itself under a blanket of snow late Friday evening. This was the first significant snowfall in over three years. The city and nearby areas were hit with steady snowfall by 7 p. m. , making roads slippery and dangerous. The forecast predicted a hefty 5 to 9 inches of snow over the weekend, with some spots possibly getting up to 11 inches. This amount of snow is a big deal, especially since some areas have seen very little snow over the past three winters. The snow was expected to start in the afternoon, reach its peak overnight, and then slow down by early Saturday.This snowstorm hit right after Christmas, making things more complicated for travelers. It's one of the busiest travel times of the year. To get ready, city and state agencies were busy. They were treating streets and highways with liquid salt and getting snow plows ready. Airlines started canceling flights at New York's three major airports. New Jersey even declared a state of emergency. Storm warnings were issued for southeastern New York, northern New York, western Connecticut, and eastern Pennsylvania.
