New York Map Stays: A Republican Win

New York, NY, USATue Mar 03 2026
The U. S. Supreme Court decided Monday to keep a New York congressional map in place, overturning a lower court that said the lines unfairly weakened Black and Latino voters. The ruling came without a signed opinion, vote count or explanation—common for emergency orders. For Republicans, it means the current map can stay until appeals finish and is likely to be used in the midterm elections.
Representative Nicole Malliotakis, who serves Staten Island and parts of South Brooklyn, had asked the Court to block a state judge’s order that would have forced her district lines to change. That move could have cost her seat. She thanked the justices in a brief statement, saying they “stopped the voters on Staten Island and in southern Brooklyn from being stripped of their ability to elect a representative who reflects their values. ” The case centers on New York’s 11th Congressional District, the only city district held by a Republican. It joins other mid‑cycle redistricting disputes that have come to the Court’s emergency docket after President Trump encouraged GOP leaders to redraw maps favorably. The decision is temporary, but it gives Republicans a chance to keep the seat in the upcoming elections.
