New York's recent report card for grades 3–8 has sparked a heated debate about the state of education. Eva Moscowitz, CEO of Success Academy, a charter school network, argues that the system is letting students down. She points out that while 57% of students are proficient in math and 53% in English, this is not good enough.
Moscowitz believes the issue is complex, involving politicians, unions, and bureaucracies. She highlights the problem of zoning, where students' access to quality education depends on where they live. This means that families with more resources can move to better school districts, while others are stuck in underperforming schools.
Success Academy, a charter school network, offers an alternative. It allows parents to choose where to send their kids, regardless of their zip code. Moscowitz argues that this choice is powerful, especially for families who cannot afford to move to better school districts.
The network has seen impressive results, with 96% of its students passing math and 92% passing English. This is a stark contrast to the state average. Moscowitz attributes this success to the freedom charter schools have to innovate and adapt.
However, charter schools like Success Academy face criticism. Some argue that they take funding away from traditional public schools. This funding could be used to improve facilities, boost teacher salaries, and recruit more teachers.
Despite the pushback, Success Academy continues to grow. It is now the fourth-largest school district in New York, serving over 20, 000 students, primarily from low-income Black and Hispanic communities.
The debate over charter schools and the future of education in New York is far from over. But one thing is clear: the current system is not working for everyone, and something needs to change.
