In 2025, New York's subway system saw a small drop in overall crime, but not all categories improved. There were 91 fewer crimes compared to 2024, bringing the total down to 2, 160. This drop was mostly due to fewer robberies and thefts. Robberies went down by 57, and thefts decreased by 41. Murders also saw a big drop, going from 10 to just 4, which is the lowest in five years.
However, not everything was positive. Rapes increased by 50%, from 6 to 9, and assaults went up slightly. December 2025 was especially bad, with a 3% increase in major crimes compared to December 2024. The biggest jumps were in thefts and assaults. To make things safer, the government increased overnight patrols and proposed more funding for security. But even with these efforts, some crimes are still going up. This shows that while things are getting better, there's still work to be done.
