Newport News Opens Energy Innovation Hub
Newport News, USAFri May 01 2026
The Secure Energy Future Center (SEFC) in Newport News has opened its doors, marking a new chapter for the city’s push toward clean and reliable power. The building, part of a network of Virginia Tech research parks, focuses on turning ideas into real products that can help the economy grow and create jobs.
SEFC received a $2. 7 million grant from Virginia’s Growth & Opportunity program and support from local businesses, including the city itself. Its mission lines up with the region’s priorities in defense, energy, aerospace and logistics—four pillars highlighted in the Hampton Roads Playbook.
During the ribbon‑cutting, city leaders and business figures highlighted how energy security is also economic and national security. They stressed that as global demand rises, the region must act quickly to keep its infrastructure strong and affordable.
The center already runs energy‑education courses open to anyone—from students to officials—covering topics like solar, wind, nuclear and battery storage. Students earn digital badges from Virginia Tech after finishing the sessions. The program also partners with experts to keep information unbiased and comprehensive.
Beyond classes, SEFC hosts tech meetups, industry talks and even a summer concert series at the nearby Drillfield. The space is open for startups to test new technologies, and plans exist to create public‑private labs that can showcase energy solutions in real settings.
Virginia Tech’s leaders, along with regional universities and state officials, emphasized that the center will help attract businesses, support entrepreneurs and ready workers for future roles in energy innovation. They see the hub as a catalyst that will put Hampton Roads—and Virginia—on the national map for clean power breakthroughs.
