Newsom Claims Justice Department Targeting Him Over Trump

Gavin Newsom says the U. S. Justice Department is looking into him, claiming former President Donald Trump is picking his political enemies for a probe. In a video shared online, the California governor accused the Trump administration of also focusing on his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. “If he can’t intimidate me, he’ll go after the mother of our children, ” Newsom said. He added that no crime has been proven against him and he “has nothing to hide. ” Newsom’s office reported that federal agents have reached out to people linked to him and his family, issuing subpoenas for records and interviewing associates over several years. The investigation has broadened to include his professional network, according to statements released recently. A former chief of staff for Newsom, Dana Williamson, faced federal charges in November 2025 related to a scheme that allegedly stole campaign money from former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra. Williamson pleaded guilty to some of the 23 counts. Newsom’s office noted that investigators offered her leniency for information about him, but she declined to cooperate.Becerra is a current candidate to replace Newsom in the governor’s race, running against Republican Steve Hilton who has Trump support. During the primary, Becerra was criticized for Williamson’s actions; he denied any involvement. The Justice Department has opened investigations against several of Trump’s political rivals. Cases against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James were dismissed after courts found procedural errors. A new case against James has not yet succeeded, while a grand jury in North Carolina recently indicted Comey on an unrelated charge involving a social media post. The department also continues to investigate former CIA Director John Brennan and has recently looked into allegations by E. Jean Carroll against Trump. Newsom dismissed Trump as lacking character, accusing him of selling the presidency and threatening American democracy.
