NFL Hits Caleb Williams with Huge Fine for Wearing Small‑Brand Cleats

Caleb Williams received a massive penalty from the NFL after he chose to wear cleats made by a tiny firm. The fine totaled $35,823 across two games. The first hit came after his Week 6 win over Atlanta, the second followed the Week 7 loss to New England. The league says the logo on the shoes broke the rules, even though the cleats are meant to protect players.

Caddix, a startup with just four staff members, claims its SmartStuds lower the chance of non‑contact injuries. The company’s CEO, Jack Rasmussen, says Williams never got paid or signed as a sponsor. Rasmussen defended the quarterback, stating the firm will cover his penalty if needed. He added that the brand is not an official league partner and cannot afford such a status.

The NFL forces players to hide brand marks on footwear, letting only Adidas, Nike and Under Armour appear on the field. Other athletes, like Josh Allen, wear non‑branded shoes from New Balance. About 80 players now rock Caddix cleats, including stars such as Cooper Kupp and Jalen Ramsey. None of those players have been docked money, which highlights a double standard in the league’s enforcement.

While the league talks about safety, the rulebook still bans unauthorized logos. A backup cornerback for the Cardinals was fined for writing “Glory Be 2 God” on his eyeblack, showing the NFL’s strict view on any branding. The situation raises questions about fairness and whether small innovators should be punished for trying to help athletes stay healthy.
