Ever wondered if there could be a safer way to quit smoking? Well, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just gave a thumbs up to Philip Morris International’s Zyn nicotine pouches. These aren’t your typical tobacco products. They come in flavors like coffee, mint, and menthol, and they might help adults cut back or quit cigarettes altogether. It’s the first time the FDA has approved these pouches, which are gaining popularity in the U. S. tobacco market.
You might be thinking, “Are these pouches safe? ” Not entirely, but they're considered less harmful than traditional cigarettes and chewing tobaccos. The FDA’s decision is based on the idea that these pouches could reduce disease among adult tobacco users, as long as they don’t become popular among teens.
Zyn comes in two strengths and has been available for over a decade while the FDA reviewed their data. The FDA believes these pouches could be a good alternative for smokers aiming to quit. “These nicotine pouch products meet the bar by benefiting adults who use cigarettes or smokeless tobacco products, ” said Matthew Farrelly from the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products.
The FDA has also approved similar products like e-cigarettes and snus, a Swedish tobacco product. But Zyn, unlike snus, doesn’t contain tobacco; it’s just nicotine and flavoring.
Tobacco companies have been trying to develop safer alternatives for years as smoking rates decline globally. However, there are concerns that nicotine pouches could become popular among teens. Government surveys show that fewer than 2 percent of American high school and middle school students used these pouches last year.
The FDA cited these low usage rates in their decision. Supporters of the pouches point out they work similarly to nicotine gum and lozenges, releasing low levels of nicotine to reduce cravings.
The approval of Zyn has caused some political debate, with Democrats and Republicans clashing over the potential appeal to teens. Despite these concerns, Philip Morris insists they don’t use online influencers to promote Zyn.
