Nigeria's Bold Move to Tackle Violence
NigeriaThu Nov 27 2025
Nigeria is taking big steps to fight the violence that's been happening across the country. President Bola Tinubu has just announced a national security emergency. He's planning to add 20, 000 new police officers to the force. That's a lot of new recruits! He also wants to use National Youth Service Corps camps to train them.
But that's not all. The president is also giving the green light to the Department of State Services (DSS) to recruit more forest guards. These guards will help flush out armed groups hiding in the forests. Tinubu made it clear that there will be no safe hideouts for criminals anymore.
This move comes after some serious attacks in different states like Kebbi, Borno, and Zamfara. Many people have lost their lives or been kidnapped. But there's been some good news too. Security forces recently rescued 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi and 38 worshippers in Kwara. Tinubu promised to keep working to free the remaining hostages.
The president also urged parliament to review laws that would allow states to have their own police forces. He asked religious institutions to get security protection during gatherings. And he encouraged herder associations to embrace ranching and surrender illegal weapons. This is to help end the clashes between herders and farmers.
Tinubu didn't hold back in his speech. He sympathized with families who lost loved ones and paid tribute to brave soldiers, including Brigadier-General Musa Uba. He sent a strong message to those who think they can challenge Nigeria's resolve. He said, \"Those who want to test our resolve should never mistake our restraint for weakness. \"
Nigeria has been dealing with a lot of violence lately. From Islamist insurgents to armed bandits and communal clashes, it's been a tough time. Thousands have been killed, and millions have been displaced. But with these new measures, there's hope that things might start to change.
