This week, the North Bay beaches are in for a wild ride. The National Weather Service has warned that big waves and high tides are on their way, which could lead to some serious hazards and even flooding. First, the waves. After a weekend of some seriously strong waves, another round is expected to hit early this week. We're talking waves that could reach up to 14 feet tall. These waves are coming from the west and could bring some dangerous conditions, like sneaker waves and rip currents. Sneaker waves are especially tricky because they can catch people off guard, rushing up the beach when they least expect it. And with lulls of up to 20 minutes between some of the biggest waves, it can be even harder to spot danger before it hits. But it's not just the waves that people need to worry about. King Tides, or exceptionally high tides, are also expected to make an appearance starting Tuesday and lasting through Saturday. These higher tides could lead to minor flooding in low-lying areas near the coast. The worst of it is expected to hit on Tuesday and Wednesday, when the peak of the tides and the strongest waves coincide. That's when the risk for hazards and flooding will be at its highest. So, what should North Bay residents do if they're planning on visiting the beach this week? The National Weather Service has some advice: never turn your back to the ocean and be extra aware of sneaker waves. Because as one meteorologist put it, you could be standing on the beach, dry as a bone, and then suddenly get hit by a massive wave and pulled into the ocean. It's a good reminder that nature can be unpredictable and powerful. It's important to stay informed and take precautions to stay safe.
