You might think North Koreans are far from Ukraine, but the truth is, they're right in the middle of it. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently said that around 12, 000 North Korean soldiers are fighting alongside Russian troops in the Kursk region. The thing is, these soldiers aren't being treated well. They're suffering heavy losses, and Russian forces aren't protecting them.
Why's that? Well, Russian troops are sending North Koreans into battle with barely any protection. These soldiers are so desperate to avoid being captured that they're even killing themselves to escape. It's a tough situation out there.
Zelenskyy mentioned that more than 3, 000 North Koreans have been killed or wounded. Ukrainian forces have managed to capture a few, but they were so badly hurt that they couldn't be saved. It's a grim picture.
The US also weighed in, saying that North Koreans are being treated as disposable in this war. Around a thousand of them were killed or injured in just one week! The US thinks Russian and North Korean military leaders are sending these troops on hopeless attacks.
Zelenskyy believes North Koreans shouldn't be dying in a European war. He thinks China, one of North Korea's neighbors, could influence the situation. If China is serious about not wanting the war to expand, it should put some pressure on North Korea.
