Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appealed to the country's allies for action. He warns that North Korean troops, currently training in Russia, might soon join the battlefield against Ukraine. Zelenskyy suggests a preemptive strike on these training camps, but Ukraine needs approval to use Western long-range weapons. He criticizes allies like the U. S. , Britain, and Germany for just "watching" the situation unfold. The U. S. has confirmed the presence of around 8, 000 North Korean soldiers in Russia's Kursk region, near Ukraine's border. Ukraine's military intelligence reports over 7, 000 North Koreans equipped with Russian gear and weapons have been transported to areas near Ukraine. They are being trained at five different locations in Russia's Far East.
Western leaders view this deployment as a significant escalation. It could impact relations in the Indo-Pacific region and lead to advanced technology transfers from Russia to North Korea. North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui met with Russia's counterpart in Moscow recently. Ukraine seeks permission to use Western weapons to strike deep into Russia to motivate peace talks. The U. S. argues that such missiles are limited and Ukraine already uses its own drones for this purpose. Russia sees any such strikes as a major escalation. Russia's recent missile attacks on Kharkiv and other regions underscore the ongoing conflict.
