Recently, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated that North Korea has sent troops to Russia. This is the first time a high-ranking US official has spoken publicly about this development. The exact mission of these troops is still unknown, but it’s clear that North Korea and Russia are strengthening their relationship, especially since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In the eastern part of Russia, thousands of North Korean troops have arrived and are currently being trained. However, it’s not certain what their exact role will be in the ongoing conflict. A senior US official mentioned that if Russian President Vladimir Putin is planning to send these North Korean soldiers to fight in Ukraine, it could indicate that Russia is facing significant challenges. The US military hasn’t confirmed that these troops have reached Ukraine yet, but the movement is causing concern about a potential escalation in the conflict. Defense Secretary Austin emphasized that understanding North Korea’s role in the conflict is crucial, not just for Europe but also for the Indo Pacific region.
When asked about what North Korea might get in return for its help, Austin replied that this is also still being determined. In recent months, Russia and North Korea have been strengthening their military alliance, which has worried officials in Ukraine and Washington. North Korea has been a topic of concern within Ukraine as well. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently warned that North Korean troops are preparing to join the war alongside Russia. Intelligence from Ukraine previously suggested that a small group of North Koreans have been helping Russian forces with engineering tasks and ammunition use. South Korea’s spy agency, the National Intelligence Service, recently reported that North Korea has sent approximately 1, 500 soldiers, including special forces, to Russia for training.
