North Texas is bracing for a winter storm, and schools are on high alert. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for hazardous conditions, with rain expected to turn into freezing rain and sleet starting Friday. Temperatures could plummet to single digits overnight Sunday, making roads treacherous. School districts are in a tough spot. They need to decide whether to close or keep schools open. As of Thursday, five districts haven't made up their minds about Friday classes. But they've already canceled after-school activities and sports events for the weekend. Dallas ISD is playing it safe. All schools will open Friday, but buses will run as usual. The superintendent will make the final call based on road conditions and advice from weather experts, police, and utility companies.
Richardson ISD is keeping a close eye on the weather. If they delay or cancel classes, they'll let everyone know by 5:30 a. m. DeSoto ISD is also monitoring the situation and will decide by 5:45 a. m. Friday. Arlington ISD plans to keep campuses open but will reconsider if road conditions worsen. Mesquite ISD and Fort Worth ISD are also monitoring the forecast but haven't made any decisions yet. Grand Prairie ISD doesn't expect to change schedules but is working with the city and weather service to stay updated. Universities like TCU, SMU, and UNT are also keeping an eye on the weather but have no plans to close yet.
