NYC's Big Sweep: Feds Finally Go After Known Illegal Criminals

Thu Jan 30 2025
For years, law enforcement had their eyes on certain violent illegal immigrants in New York City. But it wasn't until President Trump took office that they got the green light to go after them. Frank Tarentino, the special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in New York, said these criminals were well-known but couldn't be touched before. Now, they're being held accountable. This shift happened just days after Trump replaced former President Joe Biden. Biden's immigration policies were criticized for letting in millions of illegal immigrants, including dangerous ones who hid in sanctuary cities. Tarentino called the recent busts a "renewed focus" to protect cities and catch the most violent criminals. The raids, done in the early morning, targeted migrants with serious crime warrants like burglary, kidnapping, and even extortion. It's the kind of action that makes people feel safer, knowing law enforcement is on their side. Tarentino said it's a step to take back control of American cities. The DEA wasn't alone. The Department of Homeland Security, Secret Service, US Marshals, and NYPD Special Operations all joined in. Even the suspected leader of the Tren de Aragua gang was caught. But the exact number of arrests isn't clear yet.
