NYC's New Crime Chief: A Fresh Perspective
New York City, USAMon Nov 25 2024
Last week, Mayor Adams appointed Jessica Tisch as the latest NYPD commissioner, shaking up the city's law enforcement. Tisch, known for her data-driven approach, faces a steep challenge. Crime rates have dropped slightly this year, but they're still way up from 2019, before a wave of criminal-justice reforms. Murders are particularly concerning, with rates over 12% higher than three years ago. New Yorkers had high hopes after electing Adams to combat a crime surge, but his first two years saw felonies rise, not fall.
Tisch inherits a tough job. She must be honest with the public about the city's crime problem. It's not just the mayor's fault. The subways, once safe, now see twice as many homicides as before COVID. The NYPD needs more officers, but boosting staff won't solve everything. Tisch should use data to fix the system. She should show what happens to suspects after arrest, and track crime trends among migrants.
Tisch can make a real difference. She can help New Yorkers feel safe again. But she must be honest and proactive. The city's safety depends on it.

If Tisch upgrades CompStat to include data on arrests and summonses, will it finally tell us how many times 'Pizza Rat' has been arrested?
Are the recent appointments to the NYPD part of a larger plan to sabotage the city's crime reduction efforts?
Can Tisch use her data skills to predict when the next subway delay will coincide with a pizza slice dropping onto the tracks?
