Oak Brook Celebrates America’s 250th with Fireworks and Flags

Oak Brook is hosting a special America 250 party on September twelfth. It runs from five in the evening until nine at night on the Sports Core fields near seven hundred Oak Brook Road. Organizers say more than fifteen thousand people might show up. Getting in and parking cost nothing. Local eateries will serve food, and there will be games for kids, face painting, and balloon art.

Music will fill the air all evening. A DJ will spin tunes, and two tribute bands will play nineteen‑nineties hits. From five to six you can hear Rearview, a Pearl Jam cover group. Then from six thirty to eight Funky Monks will play Red Hot Chili Peppers songs. After the bands, the DJ continues on the Ace Hardware Stage until eight thirty, when a drone show lights up the sky. The night ends with a twenty‑five minute fireworks display.

At the same time, the village is showing Healing Fields, a tribute to the lives lost on September eleventh, two thousand one. Sponsored by American Legion Post fifty‑seven, the exhibit features two thousand nine hundred seventy‑seven American flags, one for each person who died. The flags stand at four sites: the Oak Brook Polo Grounds, the Carpentersville fire station, West Dundee’s Grafelman Park, and South Elgin’s Panton Mill Park. The Polo Grounds display is open twenty‑four hours a day from September ninth through thirteenth.

The regular Taste of Oak Brook festival had to be cancelled this year because of bad weather. Village manager Greg Summers explained that the America 250 event is not meant to replace that festival; it is a one‑time celebration of the nation’s milestone anniversary. He added that the Taste of Oak Brook will return next summer, while the America 250 party happens only this year.
