OC Grantmakers Summit: Action, Impact, and Joy in a Fire‑Test Comedy Night

The Orange County Grantmakers organized a day‑long gathering that highlighted action, impact and joy. Taryn Palumbo, the group’s director, said she timed every part of the event down to the minute. The summit marked the organization’s 20th anniversary and tried to move away from narrow topics toward simple connection. While Cristela Alonzo took the stage, a fire alarm sounded as a test. The comedian kept her composure and joked that nobody panicked when the alert rang. About 525 leaders from nonprofits and businesses listened to the remarks.

Before Alonzo, several short “Lightning Labs” talks covered using AI in the nonprofit world and keeping joy during tough conversations. Renata Simril, head of the LA84 Foundation, spoke about the link between sports and happiness. The day ended with a casual happy hour meant to help attendees network. Palumbo explained that the summit serves as a check‑in to see what worries the community and what it hopes to achieve. She said the feedback will shape the group’s plans for the next year.

Elizabeth Andrade, who runs 2‑1 Orange County, has attended many of these meetings since they began at a small center in Santa Ana. Andrade, also running for the Fountain Valley City Council, warned that new federal rules signed in 2025 make help harder to get. The law, known as 'One Big Beautiful Bill', limits donations and cuts programs such as Medi‑Cal and SNAP. She stressed that the safety net will be needed more often as people fall through the gaps. Andrade’s experience shows why collaboration matters now more than ever.

Cristela Alonzo, the youngest of four kids raised in Texas by a single mother, became the first Mexican‑American woman to star in her own primetime comedy. She urged the audience to “see the movie”, remembering her mother’s long work hours and missed chances to enjoy entertainment. Alonzo described the three pillars of the gathering: action as constant movement, impact as clear purpose, and joy as the reason to keep going. Her story added a personal touch to the event’s message about using everyday moments to create change. The summit closed with a mix of laughter, networking and a shared sense of purpose.
