Ocean Data in Peril: Why NOAA's Buoys Are at Risk

In some cases, buoys have even been taken out of the water because there isn't enough money to maintain them. The problem is getting worse because the process of giving out the money is taking longer than usual. New rules mean that every grant over $100, 000 needs to be approved by the secretary of commerce. This is slowing things down, and if the money doesn't come soon, some services might have to shut down. This is a big deal because a lot of people rely on this data. Fishermen use it to decide where to fish and whether it's safe to go out. Shipping companies use it to plan their routes and avoid dangerous weather. And scientists use it to track things like algal blooms and endangered whales. If the money doesn't come soon, we could lose this important information. And that could put lives at risk, especially during hurricane season. So, it's important that Congress and NOAA figure out how to fund this program properly.
