Ohio Governor Race Heats Up as Controversial Ad Splits GOP
Vivek Ramaswamy’s new advertisement has ignited a fierce debate inside the Ohio Republican Party. The spot features his opponent’s estranged mother, Donna Arthur, calling Democratic gubernatorial nominee Amy Acton a liar. Acton has spoken openly about being abused by her mother’s husband and says she hasn’t spoken to her mother in decades. Democrats quickly denounced the ad as a cheap attack. Many Republicans also distanced themselves, including Governor Mike DeWine and Senator John Husted. DeWine called the ad deeply troubling and urged Ramaswamy to pull it. Yet some GOP figures defended the spot. Vice President JD Vance told fellow Republicans to stop whining and focus on winning. President Donald Trump praised the ad as powerful on Truth Social.

The move suggests Ramaswamy believes he is behind in the race, though not by a huge margin. Candidates who hold a comfortable lead rarely gamble on such a risky tactic. His team seems to think the controversy itself could close the gap, even if the message is weak. In campaign terms, they might be playing chess while others think they are just playing checkers. Most strategists view the ad as a losing gamble. They also worry that other Republicans sharing the ballot, like Husted, could suffer from the backlash.

Black voters are becoming a decisive factor in several Senate contests. In Michigan, former Representative Mike Rogers opened a campaign office in Detroit, a city where the majority of residents are Black. Detroit has a history of helping Democrats win, and Rogers hopes to flip that trend. His opponent, Abdul El‑Sayed, struggled in the Democratic primary there. Rogers is now reaching out directly, appearing in local bars and shaking hands with voters. The tight race could hinge on whether these voters trust Rogers or stick with the Democratic field.
